Using the SCENE mode A special attraction of summer is the fireworks displays. However, it's difficult to take a picture showing the fireworks coloring the night skies as they do in real life. You need to set the focus, the exposure and the ISO in a way that's different from regular photography. Also, firework displays are held only in special occasions so you don't have many opportunities to re-take a shot. Try remembering the main points and putting them to use next time you have a chance.
Set [SCENE] to [FIREWORKS] The shutter speed is set to a slow value and the focusing point is set to (infinity). And don't forget that a tripod is essential for shooting at slow shutter speeds. Each of the camera's settings is important when shooting firework displays. You need to set a slow shutter speed and also set the focus to infinity in order to match the fireworks up in the sky. You can take care of both settings at once, simply by setting [SCENE] to [FIREWORKS]. Try correctly timing your pressing of the shutter button to the moment when the fireworks explode open.

Useful things to remember
You can take pictures in manual mode (M) even if your camera doesn't have the [FIREWORKS] mode. Set the camera to M and adjust the shutter speed and aperture. Setting the aperture to F8 and the shutter speed to 3 - 4 seconds should give good results. Set the ISO sensitivity to 100 or 80. And don't forget to change to MF (manual focus) and set the focusing point to (infinity).
If possible, try to shoot the fireworks so that they are downwind from your position. At downwind from the fireworks you may lose visibility because of the smoke. Firework displays attract large crowds so it's important to check this beforehand and get there early to secure a good location.
It is convenient to have a penlight handy in case you need to replace the memory card or battery in a dark place.
